Gov. Abbott reasserts defunding cities who defund police

A day after announcing that his administration would be defunding cities like the City of Austin, who opt to defund law enforcement, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott appeared on Fox News’ “Hannity” show where he reasserted position to “defund cities.”

“The City of Austin defunded police even as the city ranked #1 in us for the highest percentage of murders in the first half of 2020,” said Gov. Abbott, adding that “if a city defunds law enforcement, they will lose the lifeblood of revenue they receive from property taxes in Texas.”

Abbot also said that the bill he is working on is “going to defund cities, and cities’ ability to operate at all if they try to defund law enforcement.”

Abbot says he is not going to allow the same chaos that has occurred in other U.S. cities like Portland and Seattle, and will not allow cities to turn over power to “Socialistic forces.”

“They are caving to the forces of Socialism. Texas is laying down a marker. Such actions are not going to be tolerated in Texas… We will not accept turning power over to these Socialistic forces that seek to abandon the rule of law.”-Gov. Greg Abbott

Texas Democrats like Austin Mayor Steve Adler want Abbott to focus on COVID pandemic and not about their efforts to defund police.
