San Antonio – Shortly after the Trump tour bus rolled away from it’s second stop at the local Republican Party of Texas campaign office, Texas Politics was able to sit down with Rep. Chip Roy to discuss his reelection race against former state Senator Wendy Davis (D).
Davis, a devout feminist who once advocated and filibustered legislation in support of “late-term abortions,” has mounted a strong challenge against Roy in the Austin-centric congressional race in Texas’ 21st district.
Now the controversial lawmaker has announced that she was “honored” to receive the endorsement of one of the country’s leading defund police groups, Indivisible.
Rep. Roy did not pull any punches when asked to talk about Davis and her position of defunding police
“Wendy Davis is taking a page out of his playbook,” said Roy in referring to President Trump’s recent assertion that vice president Joe Biden, aka “Joe Hiden,” was avoiding the question of supporting the defund police movement.
Davis has not stated whether she supported or opposed defunding police, and Roy was quick to point that out, saying that he didn’t think “it’s that hard to come out with a firm statement that you stand with law enforcement,”
“I’m unapologetic about this,” added Chip “I stand with our law enforcement community. I stand with law and order. I stand with making sure we keep our communities safe. Unfortunately, Democrats are unwilling to do that.”
Roy believes that Biden and Democrats “are seeing the polls and trying to back-peddle a bit” about not supporting law enforcement.
“Where were they when law enforcement needed them to stand alongside them before our streets were burning?” asked Roy before directed the question to Davis
“And that’s what I want to say to Wendy Davis. I don’t care what she says between now and November 3rd, where was she when it mattered,” asked Roy.
Roy answered his own question.
“She was nowhere. She was hiding in her condo in downtown Austin instead of standing with cops.”
Earlier this year after violent riots broke out in downtown Austin, Davis was silent, even after the City of Austin voted to slash police funding, Davis stayed quiet on the issue.
Before the vote came down, Davis’ spokeswoman said the former legislator had “no comment” on “the question of what she thought of proposed cuts to the Austin Police
Davis may have just answered the defund police question.
“It is not enough to discuss a need for bias trainings or an increase in body cameras -- we must demand transformative change. Following the lead of Black-led organizations like the Movement 4 Black Lives, we believe it is critical to defund the police and reinvest in community services that keep everyone safe. Keep reading for information on how we got here, what it means to defund the police, and action steps you can take now to take action in solidarity with Black lives.”- Indivisible (website)
