As House Democrats continue to push the Senate to vote for the HEROES Act, a bill that would give Americans more COVID-19 relief, the updated version narrowly passed in the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives.
Reps. Joaquin Castro, Sheila Jackson Lee, Al Green, and just about every member of Texas Congressional Caucus, pressured Republicans to pass the initial version of the bill, but now Speaker Pelosi has renegotiated a new, less funded version of the recovery bill.
In response to the bill, Texas Rep. Jodey Arrington (R) called the HEROES Act “pot smoke and mirrors.”
“While millions of Americans suffer from forced shutdowns, this bill sends stimulus checks to illegal immigrants, directs taxpayer funds for small businesses to Planned Parenthood, and pays people more to stay on unemployment rather than return to work,” said Rep. Arrington. “While we can’t let perfect be the enemy of good when negotiating COVID relief legislation, we must resist accepting any deal that recklessly increases our deficit spending on irresponsible, nongermane policy proposals.”
President Trump is expected to sign another pandemic recovery bill, perhaps even this watered-down HEROES Act.
