Rep. Omar goes after Cruz and Obama for not supporting 'defund the police'

Progressive Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar has taken aim at both Republican and Democratic politicians who questioned her call  to “defund the police."

When Texas Senator Ted Cruz (R) tweeted that Rep. Omar and Democrats continued to show their “contempt” for law enforcement, a defensive Omar snapped back at Cruz, saying that the senior senator from the Lone Star state should “stop worrying about Minnesota and start worrying about the massive food lines, impending eviction crisis, and COVID-19 spikes in Texas.”

Omar appears to be referring to a recent instance where thousands of Texans affected by the pandemic lined up to receive food donations prior to the Thanksgiving weekend.

Cruz’s remark was in response to a Fox News story where Omar affirms her support to cut police funding in Minneapolis by $8 million, even as crime has spiked in Minnesota and in other Democratic-controlled cities that have also support Omar’s ‘defund police” initiative.

"Of course she does. Democrats’ contempt for the brave men & women of law enforcement is real," tweeted  Sen. Cruz. "What Dems don’t realize: these radical proposals don’t just hurt police officers. They hurt the communities already disproportionately affected by violent crime."

But while snapping at Cruz is to be expected because of his ongoing one-man “Cruzade” to counter Socialist Democrats in the U.S. Congress, Omar’s apparent distaste with former President Barack Obama over his call for Democrats to stop pushing the “defund the police” narrative.

President Obama asserted in an interview with Peter Hamby that Democrats lose people with "snappy" slogans like "defund the police."

Obama added,  "You lost a big audience the minute you say it, which makes it a lot less likely that you're actually going to get the changes you want done.”

“We lose people in the hands of police,” said Omar. “ It’s not a slogan but a policy demand. And centering the demand for equitable investments and budgets for communities across the country gets us progress and safety.”
