Castro Presses Senate Republicans on $2,000 Checks

In the battle to direct an effective and efficient COVID-relief bill, Democrats and President Trump (R) found some common ground after the President slammed lawmakers’ attempt to send Americans a $600 stimulus check. Calling for Americans to receive a $2,000 check instead, Democrats agreed, but they’re also pointing out that this has been their goal all along.

Taking to social media to further explain what Democrats have wanted to provide for Americans struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic, Texas Rep. Joaquin Castro (D) commented that he “voted for and the House passed $2,000 checks for Americans in need.” He added that “Democrats have been fighting for more economic relief – but Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans have stood in the way” of making this possible.

Castro further questioned if both Texas Senators Ted Cruz (R) and John Cornyn (R) “support $2,000 checks for struggling Texans?”

After President Trump slammed the initial coronavirus relief package, noting that it was filled with “pork” instead of helping the American people in a time of need, Democrats praised the President for wanting to raise the amount of money delivered to struggling Americans. However, Republicans pushed back on the raise, and this caused an exchange of words between prominent Republicans and the President.

In the end, President Trump signed the controversial relief bill, but his Deputy Assistant informed the public that Trump had “told Congress that I want far less wasteful spending and more money going to the American people in the form of $2,000 checks per adult and $600 per child.”

Judd Deere, the Deputy Assitant, added that President Trump is “sending back to Congress a redlined version, item by item, accompanied by the formal rescission request to Congress insisting that those funds be removed from the bill.”

Senate Republicans have already voiced their approval of directing $2,000 to the American people during this time, but both Texas Senators have not shared their opinion on the matter.
