Most Americans Oppose Removing Trump

According to a new NBC News poll, Americans are largely divided when it comes to whether or not President Donald Trump (R) should be removed from office. With just five days left in his administration, Independents also narrowly oppose the removal from office with the poll showing that 45% are in favor of removal while 53% of Independents are against the President being removed from office.

After the storming of the Capitol, Democrats condemned the attack while also placing blame on President Trump, which subsequently led to an ultimatum given to Vice President Mike Pence (R). The deal was to either enact the 25th amendment to remove President Trump, or Democrats would introduce Articles of impeachment against him. In turn, earlier this week, President Trump became the first President in history to be impeached twice.

However, a new poll shows that Americans are split along party lines. Conducted between January 10th and January 13th, the poll showed that almost 9 in 10 Democrats argue that Trump should be convicted in the Senate and removed from office. In contrast, less than 1 in 10 Republicans are in favor of the same. Taking into account that Independents largely agree with Republicans, it indicates that most Americans do not believe that the President should be removed from office.

It has been a controversial discussion that has only further divided the country and lawmakers. 10 Republicans voted to impeach the President, and talks of Republican infighting have stymied progress on a higher stimulus check being provided for the American people.

Although President Trump was impeached by the House, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R) said that the Senate would not be reconvening in order to convict the President, which all but removed conviction from the equation.

President-elect Joe Biden (D) is scheduled to be inaugurated on January 20th, 2021, and President Trump has already announced that he will not be in attendance.
