Last week, thirteen Texas Democrats sent a letter urging Governor Greg Abbott to prioritize the low-income individuals in the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine.

The legislatures cited Abbott’s current provisions to “protect vulnerable populations who are at greater risk of severe disease and death” and requested more targeted efforts to prioritize low-income individuals. With reference to studies by the World Health Organization, they asserted the disproportionate impacts the COVID-19 pandemic had on low-income families and proposed income ranges to achieve greater specificity. The letter additionally highlighted the exacerbation of economic disparities resulting from the pandemic.

“In light of this extraordinary crisis, we urge you to prioritize low-income individuals and households, including high risk minority groups, in the allocation of COVID-19 vaccine doses,” the letter concluded. “It is our duty to prioritize individuals and households that are in dire need of relief.”

The letter was signed by Reps. Vicente Gonzalez, Henry Cuellar, Filemon Vela, Eddie B. Johnson, Lloyd Doggett, Sheila Jackson Lee, Joaquin Castro, Marc Veasey, Colin Allred, Veronica Escobar, Lizzie Fletcher, Sylvia Garcia, and Al Green.

Gonzalez later tweeted the letter and wrote: “If we are going to be successful in beating this virus, we need to work together to streamline and improve the administration of vaccines. I look forward to working with Greg Abbott on this.”
