Texas Democrats Stand with Biden’s Energy Policies
Following weeks of backlash against President Joe Biden’s energy policies, the Texas Democrat Party asserted its support for Biden’s climate-centered energy agenda, attacked the “false narratives” promulgated by Republicans, and promoted the optimistic attitudes of industry experts.
Citing an article published by the Texas Tribune, the Party relayed research conducted by experts in the energy sector that the progressive policies are beneficial to Texas.
As reported by the Texas Tribune, deputy director of the University of Texas Energy Institute Dr. Michael Webber insists that “basically every executive action Biden’s taken is good for Texas oil and gas,” by giving Texas a competitive advantage over states facing downturns in production. “It’s one of those things where it’s probably good for Texas — Biden’s doing battle against Texas’ competitors,” he commented.
In the run up to last year’s presidential elections, Texas Republicans campaigned aggressively against the Democrat climate policy, featuring a digital ad run by Gov. Greg Abbott (TX-R) titled “Biden: Bad On Oil, Bad For Texas.” Following his election, lawmakers on both sides were pessimistic about the President’s energy policies and pushed back against early executive orders.
Yet industry experts have pointed to the push from global market forces to limit reliance on fossil fuels, as well as the long-term decline in the oil and gas industry, predating Biden’s election. The article asserts: “in 2014, more than 2.5% of jobs in Texas were in the oil and gas, mining and quarrying industries, according to the Texas Workforce Commission. At the beginning of 2020 — before the coronavirus pandemic and a global drop in the demand for oil — the share of jobs in the Texas oil and gas field had fallen to about 1.8%.”
Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:
“Democrats are the party of the working people and jobs remain a priority for this administration. President Biden has made a promise to not only create more well-paying, unionized and permanent jobs, but he is also giving Texas an amazing opportunity to lead the nation in this effort and put millions of people back to work. Texas oil and gas jobs were already being lost under Republican leadership. President Biden has a plan to invest in the energy sector, create well-paying union jobs, and help transition our economy towards the future. Texas and Texans must continue to be a leader in charting the path ahead.”
