Ahead of the 2022 lieutenant gubernatorial election, former President Donald Trump on Monday endorsed Republican incumbent Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick for reelection.
“Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick is a great fighter for the people of Texas. He has stood up for Life, Liberty, the Second Amendment, Border Security, our Military and our Vets, and our God-given Freedoms,” wrote Donald Trump in his official statement. “He has governed by conservative principles of low taxes and careful spending, always doing what is best for his great State and for America. Texans should re-elect him! He is outstanding and has my Complete and Total Endorsement!”
Patrick has said he plans to run for a third term in 2022 but that it would be his last if he wins. He will likely be run against Democrat candidate Mike Collier, who lost against Patrick in 2018 by 5 percentage points. Collier announced two weeks ago that he would be running against Patrick again.
“I’m very concerned about businesses losing interest and coming here and making jobs in Texas,” Collier said. “We are getting a terrible reputation, and I know this as a businessman. We are getting a terrible reputation with businesses around the country as to whether or not we can actually move and create jobs in Texas.”
While Patrick remains the favorite, he has recently drawn heat from his party over unpopular amendments to the constitutional carry bill, as well as rules requiring a COVID-19 test to participate in certain chamber procedures.
