Ahead of the special legislative session, Republican House Speaker Dade Phelan has announced the formation of House Select Committee on Constitutional Rights and Remedies. In a statement, he described the committee as the “ideal forum for ensuring the thoughtful consideration of items that may be on a special session call.”

On Thursday, Texas lawmakers will return to Austin to reconsider legislation that failed in the regular session, and to pass a budget for the Legislature. Abbott has already said that he plans to ask state lawmakers to work on two priority elections and bail bills that died in the final hours of the regular legislative session after House Democrats walked out of the chamber.

“The issues that the Legislature will be tasked with undertaking are by their very nature complex, and a select committee with expanded membership and expertise is the ideal forum for ensuring their thoughtful consideration,” said Speaker Phelan. “The members I have appointed today bring diverse viewpoints that will greatly benefit the House as these constitutional issues are debated and decided, and I thank them for their willingness to serve in this capacity.”

The bipartisan committee will be chaired by Republican Rep. Trent Ashby, while Democrat Rep. Senfronia Thompson will serve as Vice Chair. They will be joined by Reps. John Bucy, Travis Clardy, Charlie Geren, Jacey Jetton, Ann Johnson, Stephanie Klick, Brooks Landgraf, J.M. Lozano, Oscar Longoria, Joe Moody, Victoria Neave, Matt Shaheen and James White.
