Texas Senators Ted Cruz and John Cornyn wrote a letter to President Biden Monday urging him to approve Gov. Greg Abbott’s request for a federal emergency declaration to cope with the border crisis.

“It is our understanding that the State of Texas, through the Office of the Governor, has formally requested an emergency declaration as a result of the ongoing crisis at the border, consistent with Title V of the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Act. Governor Abbott previously issued a state disaster declaration for a number of Texas counties along the state’s southern border due to the increase in illegal border crossings and the ongoing humanitarian crisis for most of 2021,” the letter to Biden from the Texas Senators reads.

The Texas Senators cited the massive surge of more than 16,000 migrants, mostly Haitian nationals, who encamped under the Del Rio International Bridge and noted the latest August numbers from the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) that saw 208,887 migrants at the southwestern border. The numbers from CBP was the second straight month that encounters had exceeded 200,000.

Abbott requested the emergency declaration last Monday, stating a surge of migrants who encamped under the International Bridge in Del Rio had overwhelmed federal agents and the community. In his 5-page letter to Biden, Abbott explained the Biden administration’s failure to halt illegal crossings is leading to “substantial burdens on local and state resources, as well as federal resources.”

“This surge poses life-threatening risks to residents of Val Verde County and is quickly overrunning law enforcement and health care and humanitarian resources which were never intended to be used in this capacity,” Abbott wrote in his letter to Biden. “The disaster caused from individuals unlawfully crossing the Texas-Mexico border is of such severity that supplementary federal assistance is necessary to lessen the threat of disaster, save lives, and protect property, public health, and safety.”

According to the Texas Governor, the state has spent more than $3 billion in state funding for resources to handle the crisis created by the Biden administration due to its lax immigration policies. Texas legislature recently passed a bill allocating an additional $2 billion in state funding for border security.

In a press conference last week, Abbott vowed to “continue surging state resources to secure the border and address the chaos at Del Rio,” citing the latest Texas border area that saw a massive influx of illegals over the past week. The lack of Border Patrol manpower to deal with the massive influx of Haitian migrants flocking to the impromptu camp also saw hundreds of Haitians crossing back and forth over the Del Rio river to Mexico for food and supplies, causing major security concerns among local and national Texas officials.

“The Biden Administration’s failure to enforce immigration laws and halt illegal crossings on a federal dam poses life-threatening risks to Texans and the migrants themselves. Texans ― and all Americans ― demand and deserve a secure southern border and the protection of our nation’s sovereignty. I thank the brave men and women of the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas National Guard for stepping up in the federal government’s absence to address this crisis,” Abbott said.

Cruz (R-TX), who visited the Del Rio area the following day despite first being barely reported of the surge of migrants illegally crossed the Del Rio sector, slammed Biden’s ” open border politics” and lack of preventing the crisis led to this ongoing crisis.

A majority of Texas House Republicans have also sent a letter to Biden to declare an emergency at the border. Fourteen of the 23 Texas Republicans signed on to the letter penned by Rep. Lance Gooden.
