After Democratic Rep. Filemon Vila abruptly decided to leave the U.S. House of Representatives, Gov. Greg Abbott called for a special election to fill Rep. Vila’s District 34 seat, setting the stage for what could be a historic election as Mexican-born Mayra Flores is poised to possibly make history.

Maya Flores (R-TX), the Conservative Republican mother of 4 and wife to a U.S. Border Patrol officer, could become first ever Mexican-born member of the US Congress.

As Flores holds the line on her conservative values,  could she offset the polarizing US Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez (D-NY) in the House of Representatives?

While Flores’ prospects are high, victory is not looking as uphill as many Democrats have expected in this congressional district.

According to POLITICO, pollster Chris Perkins  said that Republicans, “have a real chance to win this district for the first time ever and flip a Democrat-held seat.”

In a recent survey poll of 400 likely voters in the south Texas congressional district, the average Republican candidate beats the average Democrat candidate by a margin of 45% to 42%.  These poll results set up the perfect toss-up race, but Flores is not your average Republican candidate by any stretch of the imagination.

In a recent interview with Texas Politics, Flores spoke on the state of the current US Congress, where she made mention of Hispanic values and simultaneously trashed Rep. Ocasio-Cortez.

Flores said in response to Ocasio-Cortez’s politics, “They do not represent us, they do not represent the Hispanic community.  They represent the Democrat party, not the Hispanic community.”

Flores then accused “AOC” of not being Godly and having family values.

“Again, we’re all about God, life, and family.  They don’t stand for those values,” said Flores.

She continued, “If they went and asked their abuelitas (Grandmothers), ‘do you support abortion?’ I guarantee you that abuelita would get very upset.  That is not how we are raised, we were raised to always defend life and they’re not fighting for the values that they were raised in.”

Flores elaborated on Hispanic Democrats, namely AOC, questioning their “values” and saying that she will not compromise her values or who she is for political expediency.

“They’re abandoning their values, they’re abandoning their culture over a political party.  I’m not willing to do that.  I’m not willing to forget how I was raised, I’m not willing to forget my culture, and my background for a political party and I stand strong with that,” added Flores.

The special election will take place on June 14th in one of the most crucial parts of the state of Texas.  From Brownsville to San Antonio, the region has trended more conservative than usual, as Trump’s popularity soared among Latinos in 2020.
