A complaint against Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz was filed Wednesday by the 65 Project, a group seeking to disbar lawyers who worked on cases on behalf of former President Donald J. Trump in his attempts to subvert the results of the 2020 election.

“Mr. Cruz played a leading role in the effort to overturn the 2020 elections. And while the same can be said about several other elected officials, Mr. Cruz’s involvement was manifestly different,” the complaint reads.

Cruz had represented Pennsylvania Republicans in their efforts to cast out nearly all 2020 absentee ballots in their state, which the Pennsylvania Supreme Court rejected. He also represented Trump in a Texas lawsuit aiming to bar Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan and Wisconsin from using their election results.

“He chose to take on the role of lawyer and agreed to represent Mr. Trump and Pennsylvania Republicans in litigation before the U.S. Supreme Court,” the complaint said, citing his role in two cases, neither of which succeeded. “In doing so, Mr. Cruz moved beyond his position as a United States senator and sought to use more than his Twitter account and media appearances to support Mr. Trump’s anti-democratic mission.”

The complaint attacks Cruz’s  participation in lawsuits protesting the results in Pennsylvania and proliferation of false claims about widespread election fraud in the weeks between Election Day in 2020 and Jan. 6, 2021

“Mr. Cruz knew that the allegations he was echoing had already been reviewed and rejected by courts,” the complaint reads. “And he knew that claims of voter fraud or the election being stolen were false.”

A spokesman for Cruz has since dismissed the 65 Project as “a far-left dark money smear machine run by a who’s who of shameless Democrat hacks.”
