The last few weeks have shined a spotlight on fractures within the Democratic Party. There were the Progressives and the Moderates. There were the ones publicly backing another Biden presidential run and those dodging the question.

There were the ones clamoring to forget the House in a last ditch effort to at least save the Senate and the ones refusing to abandon Speaker Pelosi. For all their differences, however, Democrats have never been more united in the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Nancy Pelosi called the ruling “cruel”, “outrageous”, and “heart-breaking”. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee said it was a “dark day for America” and the Texas Democratic Party wrote “our worst fear was realized”. These comments echo the concerns of hundreds of thousands of Democratic high-rollers, small-dollar donors, organizers, and volunteers around the country.

One Texas Democrat running for Congress has charted a different path. At a campaign event on May 12th , District 23 hopeful, Marine veteran John Lira, downplayed the possibility of what would happen if Roe v. Wade was overturned.

In audio from the event, Lira can also be heard saying liberal abortion laws in Colorado and New York go too far while suggesting there should be limits on abortion – a position that few Democratic candidates have been willing to take. Lira even argued Democrats look like “hypocrites” on the issue of abortion.

“It’s something that I’ve struggled with and I still struggle with the thought of aborting a pregnancy, of ending a pregnancy early,” said Lira.

When asked about states like New York and Colorado, who allow doctors to conduct late-term abortions, Lira took pause.

“Earlier in the pregnancy is different than aborted (sic) and later in the pregnancy,” added Lira before saying he was not “preaching for more abortion.”

Lira went on to  say that Democrats are forcing themselves to become “hypocrites.”

“Ironically, you’ve probably noticed this where, keep government out of my life Republicans are saying ‘no, no, actually government does have the right to say no’ and the pro, pro kind of government to decide (sic), well, Democrats are saying, ‘nope, the government should not decide that somebody kind of, kind of, forcing us to be hypocrites,” said Lira.
