In a new 90 second political ad released last week, Mothers Against Greg Abbott, a new political action committee, voiced the need for change in Texas politics.
The video was posted on Twitter and focused largely on Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s support for far-right laws. Among the grievances were the governor’s efforts to remove transgender children from their families, legally implicate individuals seeking an abortion, as well as those who aid or abet them, and loosen of gun laws amid a wave of mass shootings. They also highlighted the infrastructure failures of Texas State agencies in 2021, which left families without water and electricity in freezing conditions.
“Mothers Against Greg Abbott” (a play off of former president Trump’s “MAGA” acronym) describes itself as a “diverse group” of Democrats, Independents and Moderate Republicans. Founder Nancy Thompson said that the aim is to “get parents involved and get them to start voting against Greg Abbott.”
“Mothers across Texas are so mad at Greg Abbott and the GOP’s policies, that every single time he opens up his mouth, he alienates a new group of parents,” she said. “What is happening right now in Texas isn’t even Republican…it’s the extremes of the party. They’re trying to totally gain control over our personal rights and freedoms and the safety that we need in Texas for our families to be able to thrive.”
Since he announced his run for governor, the group has endorsed former U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke as Abbott’s Democratic challenger.
In the video, the women made an impassioned plea for political change in Texas “before history repeats itself.”
