Joaquin Castro Announces Funding for Domestic Violence Prevention

Texas Rep. Joaquin Castro (R) recently announced new funding for “domestic violence prevention.”

“Today, I'm proud to announce nearly $1M in federal funds that I got for domestic violence prevention programs in San Antonio & Bexar County. These funds will help @guardianhouse1 and @childrenhospsa expand their work to protect survivors and prevent child abuse in our community.” tweeted Rep. Castro.

According to guardianhouse.org, the organization was “founded in 1997, Guardian House (GH) is committed to helping children and parents in high-conflict divorce situations redefine and restructure their families during this unstable transition period.”

Along with Guardian House, Rep. Castro will be working with the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio.

“Infants, children, and adolescents have special medical needs. During these years of rapid growth and development, every child needs regular medical care to stay healthy and achieve their full developmental potential. Our caring teams are committed to providing high-quality service in a comfortable and safe setting,” states the hospital’s website, ChristusHealth.org.

“Families are considered high conflict when one or more of the following criteria is present: (1) parental behavior precludes children from developing a positive relationship with the non-custodial parent; (2) ongoing adult interpersonal behavior exposes children to negative messages and inappropriate role expectations; (3) ongoing inter-parental verbal and/or physical conflict exposes children to potential emotional and/or physical harm; (4) child physical or sexual abuse and/or neglect is alleged; or (5) domestic violence exposes adult victims to potential physical harm (Flory 1998).”

The funding allocated towards the programs will help to equip workers with the proper tools and “training” to locate cases of abuse. The Texas congressman’s announcement can help to remove people from violent situations of domestic abuse in the city he resides in, San Antonio.

Castro is a member of the Intelligence Committee and Foreign Affairs committee and has been busy with their related issues. However, he has still found time to ensure funding for his local community’s safety and well-being.

Texas has been hit with a wave of issues recently including mass shootings, a power grid crisis, and questions surrounding border security and illegal immigration. Castro’s funding serves as a noncontroversial announcement during a turbulent time for the state.
