Crenshaw Says Mexican President Protects Cartels

The murder of two Americans by drug cartel members in Mexico has generated questions and outrage among lawmakers. Last week, four Americans were kidnapped, and while two were freed, two were reported to have been killed. Texas Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R) is now accusing the Mexican President of protecting drug cartels.

Taking to social media, Crenshaw shared that the President of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, is now threatening to campaign against Crenshaw if he chooses to target the cartels.

In response to the threat, Crenshaw says “bring it.”

“Apparently I live rent free in AMLO’s head,” joked Crenshaw on social media, saying that the issue “is getting ridiculous.”

“The Mexican people want action against the cartels but their president is protecting the cartels,” he argued, commenting that “this is a huge opportunity for Democrats and Republicans to come together and send a clear message to the cartels and corrupt politicians who support them: enough is enough."

This week, as questions continue to loom regarding the reason behind the kidnapping, the Gulf cartel issued an apology, condemning the violence in a letter and turning in members of the cartel. The Gulf Cartel argued that the members who kidnapped the Americans acted on their own and broke the cartel code.

"You've killed tens of thousands of Americans with fentanyl and we won't stand for it," warned Crenshaw in his social media post, writing that him and his colleagues "want to work by, with, and through the Mexican government to target the cartels."

Crenshaw goes on to mention his legislation with Florida Rep. Mike Waltz (R), which would authorize the U.S. to use military force against the cartels. The bill would give President Joe Biden (D) "the authority to dedicate resources to help Mexico eradicate the cartels once and for all," explained Crenshaw, calling on the Mexican President to "get on board."
