Rep. Hunt Plans to Vote 'No' on Bipartisan Debt-Ceiling Deal

Texas Representative Wesley Hunt (R) recently released a statement detailing why he plans to vote 'No' on the bipartisan debt-ceiling deal.

“Congressman Hunt released the following statement on his upcoming NO vote on the Biden-McCarthy Debt Ceiling Agreement,” tweeted Rep. Hunt.

In his statement, Rep. Hunt recalled previous Republican statements from last year’s elections.

“In anticipation of the 2022 Midterm Elections, the Republican Party came before the American people with an ambitious vision, it was called the ‘Commitment to America.’ One of the pillars of this commitment included ‘A Government that’s Accountable.’”

The Texas congressman made claims against President Joe Biden’s (D) approval rating, claiming that it is significantly worse than previous presidents.

“Joe Biden has the lowest approval rating of any President in 80 years. He is the weakest President in generations. We can do better than make concessions to an Administration that has lost the confidence of nearly 70% of America.”

Rep. Hunt stated that the deal did not leverage border security, hold the government accountable, include a vast majority of H.R. 1 and restore American energy dominance.

The Texas lawmaker reminded voters of his family and voting history, saying, “I have three small children at home. I fought in combat to preserve a future for my children and yours. As many of you know, shortly after the premature birth of my son, I flew back to Washington to cast a deciding vote making Kevin McCarthy the Speaker of the House on the 15th round.”

Hunt explained his reasons for supporting Speaker McCarthy, saying, “I did so because I believe it was critical for our party to be united so that we could quickly get to the work of the American people. In our first 100 days, Republicans delivered on historic legislation in the House of Representatives.”

“Many of us knew that this legislation would not make it into law during Biden’s tenure, but conservatives believed that in this struggle to raise our nation’s debt ceiling, we would force this administration to come to the table and compromise,” said Hunt.

“It was our way of keeping our word to the American people, The concessions made by the Speaker in his negotiations with President Biden fall short of my expectations and the expectations of my friends and neighbors in Congressional District 38.”

The Texas politician concluded his statement by condemning the possibility of adding to the national debt.

“Adding another $4 trillion to the national debt in exchange for spending cuts that amount to a rounding error will condemn your children and mine to generations of untold debt. If we don’t stand up to the Biden Administration now, then when? For these reasons and more, I will be voting NO on the Biden-McCarthy proposal to raise our nation’s Debt Ceiling. I urge my Republican colleagues to do the same.”

In other news, Texas Representative Joaquin Castro’s (D) amended bill targeting fentanyl trafficking has officially been passed by the House Foreign Affairs Committee (HFAC). In a statement shared on Twitter, Rep. Castro posted the details behind why the bill was introduced.

“Our fight against fentanyl trafficking shouldn’t end at the U.S.-Mexico border,” said Rep. Castro.

“Today, @HouseForeign unanimously passed my amendment to support a public health campaign to prevent fentanyl abuse and deaths.”
