Rep. Garcia Speaks Against Gun Violence

Texas Representative Sylvia Garcia took to Twitter to bring awareness to National Gun Violence Awareness Month to express her desire to end gun violence.

“Guns are the leading cause of death for children and teens in the United States, according to the CDC,” stated Rep. Garcia.

“During National Gun Violence Awareness Month, we must continue to call out those who fail to take action on gun violence that will keep our children safe.”

The CDC reports showed an all-time high of gun-related deaths totaling 45,222 lives lost. The new data revealed “a sharp 13.5% increase in the crude rate of firearm-related death from 2019 to 2020.”

“From 2019 to 2020, the relative increase in the rate of firearm-related deaths of all types (suicide, homicide, unintentional, and undetermined) among children and adolescents was 29.5% — more than twice as high as the relative increase in the general population,” said the CDC.

The state of Texas has had 17 mass shootings in 2023.

In April, a gunman in San Jacinto County opened fire and killed five people after his neighbor asked him to turn his music down so their baby could sleep.

Rep. Garcia expressed her remorse after the tragic shooting.

“I’m heartbroken and distraught by the tragedy in San Jacinto County. No family should have to experience fear and trauma within the safety of their own home,” stated Rep. Garcia.

The Texas lawmaker shared the toll that gun violence takes on families.

“Gun violence takes far too many lives and causes immeasurable pain and suffering within our communities.”

Rep. Garcia called for immediate action in order to stop gun violence.

“We need gun safety reform NOW to prevent these tragedies from happening in the future. It is unacceptable that Texas MAGA Republicans continue to put guns over people.”

“NRA over children. It must stop!” said the Texas congresswoman.

Days later, in May, 8 people were gunned down in Allen, TX, marking another mass shooting in the state. The state of Texas has faced multiple mass shootings this year, leaving many citizens frustrated at the lack of gun legislation.

The suspect was found dead, wearing tactical vests with alt-Right insignia, after a shootout with the local police. Furthermore, the shooter’s online presence has revealed ties to Nazism, sexism, and anti-Semitism.

Of the 8 lives lost, two were children.

One of the survivors of the senseless shooting was a 6-year-old boy who lost his mother, father and younger brother.
