Politicians all across the state of Texas are reacting to the recent indictment of former president Donald Trump.
Texas Representative Joaquin Castro (D) referenced the time he served as an impeachment manager for Trump’s second impeachment in 2021.
“When I was an impeachment manager, I argued that Trump incited an insurrection that gave foreign enemies unprecedented exposure to the halls of Congress,” tweeted Rep. Castro.
“Again and again, his crimes put our national security at risk. Nobody — not even a former President — is above the law.”
In a similar fashion to fellow former impeachment manager, Rep. Castro, Texas Representative Sylvia Garcia (D) stated that Trump was not beyond the realm of being punished for his possession of classified documents.
“No one is above the law — period! Nadie está por encima de la ley —punto! #TrumpIndictment"
Rep. Garcia served as an impeachment manager for Trump’s first impeachment, and shared her ethos for equal treatment.
“When I was an impeachment manager, I argued everyday that no one is above the law. Nadie está for encima de la ley.”
The Texas lawmaker continued to state that the legal system should not show prejudice against Americans because of their status.
“I believe that and vote for and cosponsor legislation to have fairness and accountability in the judicial system. No matter wealth, status, or title, everyone must be held accountable for criminal conduct.”
The Texas congressman made it clear that she wanted to see the legal system play out in the trial of Trump.
“The twice impeached, former President’s mishandling of classified documents and charges of false statements is deplorable and requires swift and immediate legal action.”
Republicans have had a mixed response to the news of Trump’s indictment. However, Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) and Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick (R) heavily disagreed with the decision.
“It’s an ugly day for democracy when a sitting U.S. President running for re-election uses the Department of Justice to indict and arrest his leading opponent,” said Gov. Abbott.
Lt. Gov. Patrick stated that the indictment was a relentless pursuit of the twice impeached former president Trump.
“The relentless witch hunt against Donald Trump continues with yesterday’s federal indictment. Former President Trump has endured attack after attack. Every citizen in America should be concerned. Whether you support Trump or not, if this type of continued targeting can happen to a former US President, it can to any citizen,” said Lt. Gov. Patrick.
The Governor and Lt. Gov. Patrick have had another issue to focus on. Amid a property tax dispute between Abbott and Patrick, Texas Representative Vicente Gonzalez (D) is asking the Governor to suspend payments on property taxes.
“The astronomical rise in property taxes is hurting the livelihoods of South Texans. @GovAbbott you have the power to freeze property taxes and help those who need it the most,” said Rep. Gonzalez.
Rep. Gonzalez attempted to remind the Governor about the economic hurdles that Texans have faced over the last few years.
“As Texans continue to recover from the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent inflation, we must continue to ensure that our small businesses and constituents have the resources they need to thrive. However, the recent increases in property taxes are impeding the growth of our communities and local economies.”
