As the 2024 presidential election begins to heat up, several candidates have announced their run for the presidency. Here’s a look at the list of those running in next year’s election.
There are 12 Republican candidates intending to challenge current President Joe Biden (D) in the 2024 presidential election. Of the 12, only two have never been politicians. These include Larry Elder (R) and Vivek Ramaswamy (R).
Larry Elder is a conservative talk radio host based in California. He rose to national prominence after a failed attempt to unseat California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) in the 2021 California gubernatorial recall election. On April 20, 2023, Elder announced his bid for president.
Some of the candidates are from the corporate world. This is the case for Vivek Ramaswamy. The entrepreneur founded the biopharmaceutical company Roviant Sciences, and has had success in various business endeavors. On February 21, 2023, Ramaswamy announced his plans to run for president.
The other 10 Republican candidates all have political experience in one way or another.
The most recent Republican to enter the race is Miami Mayor Francis Suarez (R). On June 15, 2023, Suarez announced his candidacy for president. The South Florida official has been mayor since 2017 and won the 2021 election, winning 78% of the vote. Before he was mayor, he served as the City of Miami Commissioner in the city’s District 4.
North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum (R) announced his candidacy for president on June 5, 2023. After beating Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem in 2016, Gov. Burgum was reelected in 2020.
Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie (R) has a long history as a politician. He has served as governor, as well as Morris County Board of Chosen Freeholders, Attorney for the District of New Jersey, Chair of Republican Governors Association and Chair of Opioid and Drug Abuse Commission. On June 6, 2023, Christie announced his bid for president.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) officially announced his bid for president on May 24, 2023. Gov. DeSantis is serving his second term as Governor of Florida after most recently defeating Charlie Crist (D). So far, he has made several stops around America campaigning for president as the election begins to heat up.
South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley (R) has officially announced her presidential candidacy. Haley has a history as a politician. Beginning in 2004, Haley ran for and won a seat in the House of Representatives. After being reelected multiple times, Haley would run for Governor of South Carolina in 2010. She would go on to win the election and stay in office from 2011-2017. On February 14, 2023, Haley announced her bid for president.
Former Governor of Arkansas Asa Hutchinson (R) has officially announced his candidacy to run for president in the 2024 presidential election. The candidate has served as Governor of Arkansas as well as Chair of the National Governors Association and Under Secretary of Homeland Security for Border and Transportation Security. The attorney and businessman rose to prominence prosecuting hate groups and cults, and for the political offices he held. On April 2, 2023, Hutchinson announced his candidacy for president.
On May 22, 2023, South Carolina Senator Tim Scott (R) announced his bid for the presidency. Scott has been in politics for several years. He has been a member of the House of Representatives as well as the Charleston City Council.
Former Secretary of State Corey Stapleton (R) announced his bid for president on November 11, 2022. Stapleton has run for different offices before, including Governor of Montana, U.S. Senate and for a seat in the House of Representatives. However, Stapleton would go on to either withdraw from or lose the elections.
On November 15, 2022, former president Donald Trump (R) announced his bid for the presidency. Donald Trump was president from 2017-2021. Trump is currently under trial for having classified documents and for violating the Espionage Act.
Pres. Biden also faces challengers from the Democratic party as well.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (D) announced his bid for president on April 5, 2023. Kennedy is a lawyer born in Washington, D.C. and the child of former Robert F. Kennedy (D).
On February 23, 2023, Marianne Williamson (D) announced her bid for the presidency. Williamson has run for office before, including for a seat in the House of Representatives in 2014 and for president in 2020.
The incumbent President Biden is also running for reelection. On April 25, 2023, Biden announced his bid for reelection in the 2024 presidential election.
Recently, Multiple House Republican legislators, known under the title the “Freedom Caucus." prevented four bills, including two GOP bills, from reaching the House floor.
The GOP bills would have addressed the Biden administration’s policies aimed at limiting the use of gas stoves. However, the rebellious members of Congress had other plans in mind.
“I’m not getting into any specifics. It’s the same thing as December when I said to you guys, I’m going to give a red line. I’m not gonna say we got to have A, B or C. I’m not gonna say it’s about one particular thing. But the direction that we took last week was a failure,” said Texas Representative Chip Roy (R).
