Rep. Gonzalez and CHC Call for Austrian Gov. to Return Aztec Headdress

Texas Representative Vicente Gonzalez (D) and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) called for the Austrian government to return the headdress of Aztec Emperor, Moctezuma II, to Mexico.

“This headdress is an important part of Mexico and Mexican Americans’ historical and cultural identity, which is why this important artifact should be returned home,” said Rep. Gonzalez.

Rep. Gonzalez highlighted the historical value the headdress contained.

“Emperor Moctezuma II ruled during the first contact between Spanish Conquistadors and the Aztec empire – a time that would forever change the course of humanity. His headdress serves as a unique relic of a time rife with discovery and conflict. It is a vital link between Mesoamerican culture, modern-day Mexico, and Mexican Americans in South Texas and across the United States.”

Congressman Adriano Espaillat and Deputy Chair of the CHC called for appropriate measures to be taken in regard to the artifact.

“We cannot redo history, but we can right the wrongs of the past by the actions and efforts we make today,” said Rep. Espaillat.

The deputy chair continued his statement, urging the Austrian government to give the Aztec piece back to Mexico.

“Artifacts such as the headdress of Aztec Emperor Moctezuma II hold significant places of honor and cultural meaning to their countries of origin. As we continue our efforts to address the injustices of the past, we urge that the headdress of Moctezuma II be returned to the Government of Mexico to uphold the rich legacy of the Mexican people and to its rightful place of origin.”

In other news, the bond for former president Donald Trump (R) has been set at $200,000.

Trump was recently indicted for the fourth time for his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

The specific charges District Attorney Fani Willis charged the former president and 18 allies with include racketeering. They face several allegations such as attempting to alter voting machines.

Trump has made several statements about the case, including a social media post targeting Georgia Governor Brian Kemp (R). However, the current bond agreement states that he may not communicate with witnesses in person or on social media.
