Gov. Abbott Announces Distribution of NARCAN to Fight Fentanyl Crisis

Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) recently announced the future distribution of 60,000 units of Naloxone (NARCAN).

NARCAN is a nasal medication that rapidly reverses the poisoning from opioid use.

According to the governor’s statement, municipal police, Independent School District police and police departments at higher education institutions will be eligible to receive the dispensed nasal medication.

“Texas continues to lead the fight against the growing national fentanyl crisis, as President Biden's reckless open border policies allow historic levels of fentanyl to flood across our border and into communities across the country,” said Gov. Abbott.

In his “One Pill Kills” campaign, the Texas lawmaker has consistently spoken about the harm of fentanyl. With NARCAN, the governor states that Texas can contribute to stopping deaths from the dangerous opioid.

“Fentanyl remains the single deadliest drug threat Texas and our nation have ever seen, with five Texans losing their lives every day. In April, we launched this program to distribute NARCAN to every county in Texas to combat this crisis. With this next allotment of NARCAN, Texas can help ensure that every Texas community—including our schools—has this live-saving medication to save innocent lives from the devastation of fentanyl poisonings."

Texas Emergency Management Chief Nim Kidd stated that Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) would continue to fight against fentanyl.

“As we continue this important mission to combat the deadly effects of harmful drugs, TDEM is determined to distribute this life-saving medication,” said Kidd.

“TDEM is committed to continuing our support of Texas communities working to push back against the devastating impacts of the fentanyl crisis.”

In other news, Texas Representatives Veronica Escobar (D) and Vicente Gonzalez (D) recently celebrated the Inflation Reduction Act lowering the costs of prescription drugs.

Rep. Escobar highlighted how Democratic representatives had a part in the talks surrounding healthcare.

“The Inflation Reduction Act has truly been a historic step in the right direction. With today’s announcement of medicine that will be negotiated by Medicare, @HouseDemocrats are putting people over politics and lowering costs for families nationwide.”
