Roy Votes to Table Resolution to Censure Tlaib

Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R) effort to censure Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D) has been foiled. Texas Rep. Chip Roy (R) joined 22 other Republicans in voting to table the resolution to censure Rep. Tlaib.

Rep. Greene introduced the resolution last week, citing “antisemitic activity, sympathizing with terrorist organizations, and leading an insurrection at the United States Capitol Complex.” In the three-page censure resolution, Greene lists a number of criticisms that Tlaib has directed at Israel, which includes a statement that Tlaib released one day after Hamas attacked Israel. In the statement, Tlaib shares her support for “lifting the blockage, ending the occupation, and dismantling the apartheid system that creates the suffocating, dehumanizing conditions that can lead to resistance.”

Tlaib further commented that “the failure to recognize the violent reality of living under siege, occupation, and apartheid makes no one safer. No person, no child anywhere should have to suffer or live in fear of violence.”

“As long as our country provides billions in unconditional funding to support the apartheid government, this heartbreaking cycle of violence will continue,” she added.

Tlaib has been vocal in her support for a ceasefire in Gaza, but her criticism of Israel has drawn opposition from lawmakers from both sides of the aisle.

However, despite the opposition, 23 Republicans voted against censuring the Michigan Democrat.

In response to the resolution, Tlaib said it was “deeply Islamophobic and attacks peaceful Jewish anti-war advocates.”

Greene now faces a resolution to censure her.

Vermont Rep. Becca Balint (D) introduced the resolution last week, arguing that Greene should be censured for fanning “the flames of racism, antisemitism, hate speech against the LGBTQ community, Islamophobia, Asian hate, xenophobia, and other forms of hatred.”

The House was expected to vote on the resolution this week. However, the vote was removed from the voting calendar.
