Nehls Talks Mayorkas Impeachment, Going Back to Trump Immigration Policies

Texas Representative Troy Nehls (R) discussed impeaching Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas as well as the waves of immigration that have taken place along the U.S.-Mexico border.

In a statement made in an exclusive interview with Texas Politics, Rep. Nehls said, "I think some members said they’re not against impeaching him, but it should just go into Homeland Security. So, I think that the chairman of Homeland Security should go through that process, that impeachment, gather the evidence—which I think there’s plenty of it out there and then send it to the House for vote. And I think that’s what some of those members wanted to do.”

The impeachment attempt, led by controversial Representative Marjorie Taylor Green (R-GA), was blocked as those in the House did not seem to find it urgent or necessary. However, Rep. Nehls stated that efforts were, in part, stalled because those pushing for it were disliked in the House.

“I don’t think these members didn’t want to impeach Mayorkas. I just think they wanted to go through like normal order, regular order. And, listen, I had a conversation with all these people. I said ‘Listen, if you want to accomplish your goals and objectives, number one—you got to make sure that you have some people up here that like you, that support you.”

Rep. Nehls continued, “I think some members should maybe take some of their great ideas and hand them off to somebody else so they can pass.”

When asked about the Trump-era "Remain in Mexico" policy, the Texas representative gave a response detailing his desire to return to the controversial and highly criticized policy.

“We need to go back to that. Oh, we need to go back to that. The MAGA protection protocols, we need to go to that. Maybe that’s something that we should put in there when we start negotiating this one…when we get back. That remain in Mexico will stop these people coming in here. We got to go back to that.”

Rep. Nehls stated that Democrats' desire to let Mexican migrants into the U.S. was politically motivated in order to expand their voter base.

“Well, this is a long-term plan for them. This is their goal. It’s borderless by design. They eventually want these people to get citizenship and then they’re Democrat voters.”

Many have touted this view, yet some Democratic lawmakers have pushed for stronger border security. Amid calls for tighter security at the U.S.-Mexico border, President Joe Biden (D) announced that his administration would allow an allowance for border wall construction in South Texas. The administration waived 26 federal laws, in order to approve the measure.
