Texas Representative Joaquin Castro (D) stood outside the Capitol to condemn a controversial immigration proposal strongly supported by the GOP.
“The MAGA appetite for fearmongering and demonizing immigrants won't be satisfied even if Republicans get their extreme immigration plans passed. @POTUS and Senate Democrats need to reject any supplemental package that trades anti-immigrant policy for war funding,” tweeted Rep. Castro.
The Texas congressman contextualized the upcoming vote on the proposal by highlighting how the Senate has a Democratic majority as well as the president being a Democrat. He continued, stating that a compromise that included the controversial immigration policies would be surrendering to and enabling “right-wing racism.”
Some in the GOP have tried to prevent Ukraine funding from passing unless they get their way on border security measures. However, these tactics could have terrible ramifications.
“We should be able to pass that funding without sacrificing the lives of desperate asylum seekers. If these restrictions are passed, these draconian anti-immigrant policies are passed in the supplemental, more people who seek refuge in the United States and don’t make it here will suffer,” said Rep. Castro.
“They will be oppressed. They will die because of it. Let us not pretend otherwise.”
There is currently no deal in the Senate, so it is possible that the immigration measures are not passed.
Rep. Castro has been very focused on anti-immigration policies. The congressman recently attacked Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) for his immigration-focused program, “Operation Lone Star”.
In a tweet, Rep. Castro lambasted the border policy by questioning its authenticity and highlighting the danger it posed toward migrant workers.
“.@GovAbbott's Operation Lone Star is nothing but a deadly political stunt,” claimed Rep. Castro.
“From death traps in the Rio Grande to these dangerous high-speed pursuits, Operation Lone Star is turning border communities into war zones and putting Texas families in danger.”
Earlier in the year, Gov. Abbott faced heavy scrutiny for implementing floating marine barriers in the Rio Grande. The governor stated that the barriers would deter migrants, but they instead were criticized for what many saw as inhumane treatment of human beings.
Now, months later Operation Lone Star is stated to have caused crashes that killed 74 people and injured 189 people.
