Castro Says Abbott Attempts to 'Obstruct' Operations at the Border

After the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Biden administration in its lawsuit against Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R), Texas Representative Joaquin Castro (D) blasted the governor for his attempt to “obstruct” operations at the border.

“Governor Greg Abbott is using the Texas National Guard to obstruct and create chaos at the border. If Abbott is defying yesterday's Supreme Court ruling, @POTUS needs to establish sole federal control of the Texas National Guard now,” said Rep. Castro.

The Texas Representative’s comments were in response to Gov. Abbott’s tweet in which he posted a photo of the National Guard standing at the border. The provocative tweet highlighted the governor’s continued efforts to prevent migrants from crossing the border.

“The Texas National Guard continues to hold the line in Eagle Pass. Texas will not back down from our efforts to secure the border in Biden’s absence,” tweeted Abbott after the Supreme Court ruling.

Abbott’s various tactics and legislation have taken much criticism. In December, the governor signed S.B. 4 to the dismay of many lawmakers.

“I signed a law yesterday to criminalize illegal entry into Texas & authorize the removal or imprisonment of illegal immigrants crossing our southern border. Texas will continue stepping up until we have a new president who will enforce the law,” said Abbott in December.

Critics and legal experts have challenged the legislation for its potential to cause racial profiling. Furthermore, some have questioned if the bill oversteps state powers, as some argue deportations are to be administered by the federal government.

The Texas governor is also facing several lawsuits for his harsh tactics in removing migrants from Texas. He has been in a constant back-and-forth with the Department of Justice (DOJ) who has filed a suit to stop the governor from using razor wire at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Abbott has been a constant user of busing migrants to Democrat-led sanctuary cities. This tactic has resulted in New York Mayor Eric Adams (D) launching a lawsuit against the Texas lawmaker.
