Republicans remain divided regarding a potential government shutdown. With immigration concerns quickly becoming one of the top most important subjects in the 2024 election, securing the border has become a contentious topic between Republicans and Democrats. Texas Rep. Chip Roy (R), who’s been vocal about his grievances with Republicans, is now questioning what it takes for border security.
Rep. Roy has not minced his words with Republicans when it comes to doing more to secure the border. Earlier this week, the Texas Republican took to social media to share his disapproval with the work Republicans have done so far. In his words, Republicans have given in to “the swamp” and should rethink their strategy.
This week also marks the tragic death of Laken Riley, a 22-year-old student from the University of Georgia who was murdered. The suspect is a 26-year-old Venezuela.
Because of this, lawmakers like Rep. Roy have directed blame to both President Joe Biden (D) and Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas.
Taking to social media to call for a stronger border, Rep. Roy grilled House Republicans, questioning, “how many Americans have to die before House GOP cares more about our border than it does about… fear of shutdowns? Ukraine? Continuing spying on Americans? Busting bipartisan spending caps? Asking for a friend.”
Florida Senator Rick Scott (R) also took to social media to call for stricter border control, arguing that Secretary Mayorkas and President Biden should be held accountable for mishandling the southern border.
“Keep deadly drugs and criminals from coming into this country,” Senator Scott said, adding that “everyone should agree on getting these things done ASAP.”
President Biden will be taking a visit to the southern border on Thursday, and he’s pushed back against Republicans, arguing that Republicans are more focused on appeasing President Donald Trump (R) than they are on securing the border.
He has called on Republicans to support the bipartisan national security supplemental, which “would arm Ukraine, invest in our defense industrial base, help Israel defend itself against Hamas, and get more humanitarian aid to Palestinian civilians.”
