Garcia Blasts Desantis's ‘Inhumane’ Construction Worker Bill

Texas Representative Sylvia Garcia (D) released a statement blasting Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’s (R) new bill aimed at not protecting construction workers.

“I am disgusted and disheartened but I am not surprised. Ron DeSantis is willing to let his workers die and suffer in the sun for pennies on the dollar. If you needed a better example of the hate that he and his allies promote, this is it,” said Rep. Garcia.

The congresswoman continued, “Florida is one of the hottest states in this country, and for the Governor to sign his name to a bill that will no doubt harm his constituents and his state’s economy is nothing short of negligent and inhumane.”

The Texas lawmaker linked Desantis with another controversial politician as she ripped the new bill.

“Extreme MAGA Republicans like Ron DeSantis in Florida and Greg Abbott in Texas have determined that the basic humanity of a paid rest break is a bridge too far. Both need a little business common sense: a safe and rested worker is a better worker,” said Garcia speaking of the two lawmakers.

The Texas representative concluded, “We must prioritize the safety and well-being of our outdoor workforce by taking proactive measures. Finalizing a federal heat standard will significantly reduce the risks faced by our workers and create a safer working environment for all.”

HB 433 has been criticized for the dangerous ramifications that could come from the lack of protection it leaves construction workers with. The legislation does not have to provide protection from heat exposure, and it bans political subdivisions from showing preference to a company based on its heat accommodations.

Garcia’s attack on the Republican-led legislation is reminiscent of her attack on Abbott’s SB 4. The Texas lawmaker expressed concerns that have been echoed by many in the Democratic Party surrounding the possibility of the bill contributing to racial discrimination based on one’s appearance.

“I think it’s going to lead to some horrible racial profiling. And, I think it’s clearly unconstitutional. I am so glad that the Justice Department is here, is going to file suit and the Justice Department will prevail. I mean, Supreme Court has already ruled on this issue. I don’t see how we could backpedal,” said Garcia.
