Crenshaw Simmers Down Concern Over Russian Warships

Texas Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R) says that there's no cause for worry after reports that Russian warships had made landfall in Havana. In an exclusive interview with Texas Politics, Rep. Crenshaw noted that this is nothing new. Questioning why lawmakers and political pundits are flailing their arms at the news, Rep. Crenshaw simmered down concerns over the Russian warships.

Earlier this week, a fleet of Russian ships made their way into Cuban waters ahead of a planned military exercise in the Caribbean. The news generated questions over the world possibly being on the brink of another Cold War. While some lawmakers argue that the United States must stand firm against Russia and Cuba and others question if the United States' approach to Cuba has been effective, Rep. Crenshaw is weighing in on the issue, noting that Russian warships heading to Cuba is nothing new.

“It doesn’t mean as much as people think it means. There’s a lot of people looking for reasons to be intimidated by Russia cause they have the narrative that supporting Ukraine creates World War 3," Rep. Crenshaw said. "They really want that narrative to be true. It won’t ever be true. The Russians deploying their submarines and forces to places like Venezuela and Cuba is nothing new.”

Now, the Texas congressman did express that it's a concern because Russia is sending ships to Cuba “to show that they have some type of leverage," but he instead argues that it doesn't necessarily mean that we're heading into another Cold War any time soon.

“They’re always going to be doing these kinds of things. They always have been doing these kinds of things. It’s what powers do,” Rep. Crenshaw expressed.

“We should be concerned about it, looking at it, but it doesn’t change our general strategic trajectory."
