New Poll Shows Flores Gaining Over Gonzalez in House Race

A new poll conducted by 1892 Polling shows that former Texas Rep. Mayra Flores (R) is gaining momentum against her Democratic rival, Texas Rep. Vicente Gonzalez (D). The poll also shows that Texas' House District 34 is shifting Republican, which could see both President Donald Trump (R) and Rep. Flores emerging victorious in the district.

In March 2022, Texas Rep. Filemon Vela Jr. (D) announced his resignation from the House. This led to a special election wherein Rep. Flores won. However, in November of that year, Rep. Gonzalez defeated her, turning the district blue. Fast forward to 2024, and the district is experiencing a rematch, and the likelihood of Rep. Flores winning the seat yet again is more certain after the latest poll.

According to the poll, which interviewed likely voters between September 28th and October 1st, shows that Rep. Gonzalez is in the lead with 49% over Rep. Flores' 46%. However, the race is now considered a toss-up because the incumbent congressman has lost support while his Republican challenger has gained support. The poll also showed that Rep. Flores' image is viewed positively, resulting in 45% who view her favorable compared to 37% who view her unfavorably. "Notably, the undecideds are conservative-leaning and voting for Trump 61%-12%" according to the poll.

When it comes to the presidential election, President Trump has taken the lead over Vice President Kamala Harris (D) with 49% to Vice President Harris' 47%. Those polled shared that they had a positive approval of his time in office, noting 55% who approved and 47% who disapproved.

In a statement, Delanie Bomar, the spokeswoman for the National Republican Congressional Committee, celebrated the polling results, commenting that Rep. Gonzalez's days in office could be coming to a close.

"South Texas is no longer the Democrat stronghold it used to be, and with less than a month to go, Mayra Flores is poised to flip this seat for Republicans," Bomar said.
