Newsom Hammers Trump on Tariffs at the Southern Border

At once, California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) was rumored to replace President Joe Biden (D) in the 2024 presidential election. The election came to pass with no Governor Newsom, but the Democrat stalwart remained as involved as ever. With the 2028 presidential election just a few years away, the California governor could be setting his sights on the White House. In a recent trip to the southern border, Governor Newsom hammered away at President Donald Trump (R), calling President Trump’s tariff plan “a betrayal” to the public.

This past weekend, the California governor headed to the southern border to discuss the state finishing construction on the Otay Mesa East Port of Entry.

During his remarks, Governor Newsom railed against the president-elect, warning that his plan to implement a 25% increase in tariffs against China and Mexico is “one of the biggest tax increases in U.S. history.”

“Don’t think for a second this won’t impact you,” the governor commented, adding that “90% of these tariffs will impact bottom of our economic chain, meaning lower wage workers that pay over half of these taxes.”

“There is no economic growth in America without the success and vibrancy of this region,” Governor Newsom added.

President Trump issued a stark warning shortly after winning the 2024 election in reference to tariffs that would affect Canada, China, and Mexico.

Most recently, the president-elect hosted a dinner at Mar-a-Lago with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who’s facing plummeting support in the polls as he embarks on his own reelection campaign.

During the dinner, President Trump allegedly suggested that Canada should become the 51st state and that Prime Minister Trudeau should be the governor if it meant that Canada couldn't survive on its own without "ripping" the U.S. off on trade.

Governor Newsom is viewed as a likely presidential candidate in 2028.
