With the recent declaration of support from Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) who was initially on the fence about Hegseth, the prospect of his nomination could be gaining steam.
Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) spoke during a public hearing and addressed the shocking statistics concerning crimes committed by illegal immigrants. Since 2021, nearly 200,000 illegal immigrants have been convicted of heinous crimes such as assault, burglary/robbery, kidnapping, sexual assault, and homicide. The Texas senator did not mince words when it came to his feelings toward the Biden administration's handling of the migrant crisis and its aftereffects.
"The numbers are staggering. According to ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), as of July 21, 2024, nearly 650,000 criminal illegal aliens were currently on ICE's non-detained docket, which means they've been released; they're wandering around, they're free," said Sen. Cruz. "And of those 650,000, 14,944 have been convicted of homicide. You want to know what mass deportation is? Those 14,944 better pack their bags right now, because with a new administration, we're going to show up, we're going to arrest you, and we're going to deport you. 20,061 have been convicted of sexual assault."
The Texas senator continued, chastising the lack of Democrat participation at the hearing, and taking a shot at President Joe Biden (D) and his administration.
"Now I want you to ask of my Democrat colleagues, and it is striking that virtually none of them are here, that is reflected in their conduct, because they are silent, putting their head in the sand, as the human tragedies," said Sen. Cruz. "But what resident of what blue state says, 'You know what, America is better off with 20,000 rapists being released into this country?' 105,000 146 have been convicted of assault. I would ask my Democrat colleagues if they were here, 'why the hell today does the Biden, administration, not go and arrest, every one of these criminals and deport them?' What rational world says America is better off with more criminals?"
Moreover, Cruz recently doubled down on his support for President-elect Donald Trump’s (R) selection for the Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth. Sen. Cruz shared in a social media post that Mr. Hegseth is a “strong pick” for the Trump administration.
“Great meeting with Pete Hegseth. Pete is a strong pick to help President Trump carry out his vision for our Armed Forces,” said Sen. Cruz. “He has a clear vision for refocusing the Department of Defense on its core mission: to support our warfighters and to win our nation’s wars when necessary. I stand with Pete as he navigates the confirmation process to become our next Secretary of Defense.”
