Texas Speaker of the House Race Polarizes Republicans

The race for Texas Speaker of the House has generated quite the controversy as Republicans appear split between two candidates. Texas Reps. David Cook (R) and Dustin Burrows (R) are vying for the top congressional post, but the contest has polarized Republicans in recent weeks.

The current speaker of the House, Rep. Dade Phelan (R), ran unopposed in the 2024 election. After winning, he announced that he would not seek a third term as speaker.

This left a vacancy that Rep. Cook believed he could fill.

Although he was voted as the Texas House Republican nominee for speaker of the house, disagreements with his political stance led to opposition from his party, and Rep. Burrows has emerged as a candidate who could take the top post from Rep. Cook.

Rep. Burrows is seen as the chosen pick of moderate and establishment GOP lawmakers, and he maintains that he has the necessary votes to win the speakership. The Texas Republican released a list of 76 supporters, which is the number of votes he needs to win, that includes both Republicans and Democrats.

The race between the two mirrors the divide in the House of Representatives, which saw House Speaker Mike Johnson (R) win reelection despite pushback from GOP members over his negotiations with Democrats in delivering a CR bill.

Abraham George (R), the Chairman of the Republican Party of Texas, took to social media to comment on the race for speaker. “This Speaker’s race is about respecting the will of Texas Republican voters who demand leadership that advances the conservative agenda,” he wrote on X.

Noting that the Texas House Republican Caucus, GOP leaders, and grassroots conservatives fully support Rep. Cook for the role, calling him “the rightful nominee to deliver on priorities like border security, property tax cuts, and school choice.”

George lambasted Rep. Burrows as an “insider,” saying that he’s “aligned with Democrats and engaging in deceit.” “It’s time for Burrows to drop his power grab, back Cook, and allow the legislature to focus on delivering conservative victories for Texans.”

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) recently announced a statewide tour in support of Rep. Cook. In his endorsement of Rep. Cook, Paxton expressed that “Texans deserve leadership that reflects their values."
