Attorney General Paxton Slams 'Political Witch Hunt' Against him

Nate Paul, an Austin real estate developer who was attached to the impeachment effort against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R), pled guilty to one count of submitting false information to a financial institution. Attorney General Paxton has commented on the plea, affirming the politically charged “witch hunt” against him.

In 2024, then-Speaker of the House Dade Phelan (R) led an impeachment effort against Attorney General Paxton, accusing the Texas attorney general of bribery, malfeasance, and even an extramarital affair.

Later that year, Attorney General Paxton was acquitted, but Republicans in the House remain divided to this day.

The attorney general is now pushing back against the efforts to remove him for office, commenting that Paul’s guilty plea is a good indication that state Rep. Phelan was fabricating his allegations.

“Despite years of nonstop media coverage and millions of taxpayer dollars spreading the most outlandish lies and rumors about me, this case will conclude with prosecutors dropping 11 out of 12 counts in the final days of the corrupt Biden Justice Department,” he said in a statement released on social media.

Paxton attributed state Rep. Phelan’s effort to a “political witch hunt," sharing that “Phelan’s top priority was trying to convince his friends in the media and the Texas House – many of whom are still there – to ignore the facts and go along with his failed political prosecution. Phelan and his allies worked to weaponize the impeachment process and the law against me, just like the Biden administration has attempted to do against President Trump.”

Paxton has vowed to keep fighting, noting that the days of political persecution are over now that former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi (R) will be leading the Department of Justice.

“I will not be silenced, and I will not back down,” the attorney general affirmed.
