Roy Backs Extending Trump Tax Cuts, Warns of 'Inflation Tax'

WASHINGTON—Texas Rep. Chip Roy (R) is the latest advocate for extending President Donald Trump’s (R) tax cuts, warning that Americans should be concerned about the burden of "inflation tax."

In an exclusive interview with Texas Politics, Rep. Roy emphasized the significance of extending the tax cuts, arguing that rising government spending is causing a sharp increase in the cost of living.

“It’s critically important because you’ve got American people who don’t want to see a tax increase, but equally important is the inflation tax,” he argued. “The inflation tax is a direct product of rampant government spending, which is driving up the cost of goods and services—from homes, higher interest rates, cars, food, healthcare, and so we’ve got to address that.”

The Trump-era tax cuts are set to expire in 2025, and Republicans are pushing for their extension.

The 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which was signed into law by President Trump, implemented substantial changes to the U.S. tax code. Key provisions included reducing the corporate tax rate from 35% to 21%, adjusting individual tax brackets, increasing the standard deduction, and limiting certain itemized deductions. While corporate tax cuts were made permanent, individual tax cuts are set to expire after 2025. If the tax cuts are not extended, taxpayers could face a collective increase of approximately $4 trillion over the decade spanning 2026 to 2035.

Rep. Roy concluded by reiterating that inflation remains the biggest economic threat, stating, “The inflation tax is more damaging to the American people than the traditional taxes, but both need to be cut.”

Extending the tax cuts has garnered significant support from other Republican lawmakers, and some argued this week that extending the tax cuts should be a top priority for the House as it has the potential to prevent tax increases for families and stimulate economic growth.
