Mayra Guillen, Sister of Vanessa Guillen, Challenging Al Green

Mayra Guillen, the sister of the late Army Specialist Vanessa Guillen, has announced her candidacy for Texas' 9th Congressional District. The announcement setts up a challenge against longtime Democratic incumbent Rep. Al Green (D).

Mayra, who is entering the race with no prior political experience, has been a prominent advocate for military service members since her sister's tragic death at Fort Hood in 2020. As the founder and president of the Vanessa Guillen Foundation, she has fought for justice on behalf of military personnel who have experienced harassment, assault, and systemic failures within the armed forces.

Mayra first hinted at a possible congressional run in early March 2025, suggesting that she would do so in honor of her sister.

After Rep. Green's outburst at President Donald Trump's (R) joint Congressional address, Mayra decided to not only run for congress but also to specifically challenge Rep. Green for his chair.

"After watching @RepAlGreen disrespect not only @POTUS last night, but our district, state and country, I believe it’s time for me to get into the fight like I did for my sister Vanessa Guillen!" Mayra wrote on X. "It’s time to end the propaganda displayed by these politicians, and time to help support @POTUS and his amazing Admiration to Make America Great Again! Al Green I’m coming for your seat."

Mayra's candidacy signals a potential shift in the district’s political landscape. Her advocacy work and personal connection to military justice reform could resonate with voters seeking new leadership. However, she will have to navigate the challenges of running against an incumbent with deep ties to the community.

Rep. Green has represented the district since 2005. He has yet to comment on Mayra’s announcement, but political analysts anticipate the race to be a competitive one.
