Nearly 60 House Members Condemn Trump's Election Executive Order

The Congressional Voting Rights Caucus Co-Chairs recently led nearly 60 House members in sending a letter to President Donald Trump (R) for his "unconstitutional" executive order relating to American elections. The lawmakers in the House contend that Trump's Preserving and Protecting the Integrity of American Elections executive order includes "illegal overreach" and denies equal access to people of every race, gender, or financial status.

The letter to President Trump states that his actions could disenfranchise "millions of voters" in upcoming elections.

“In no uncertain terms, we believe this order is unconstitutional, illegal, and impractical, could result in millions of voters being disenfranchised, and opens the door for false and misleading accusations of impropriety from your Administration," wrote the lawmakers.

The members of Congress also believe that the executive order from Trump could affect Indigenous People, women who did not retain their last name, and those who do not have the "costly documentation" that is required to vote.

“With election administration consistently underfunded around the country, your Executive Order imposes an unfunded mandate of the bedrock principle of our democracy,” the members continued. “Absent efforts by your Administration to support local governments in implementing your Executive Order, there are strong signs that the intent of your Executive Order is to cause chaos in election administration, not to increase election security.”

The Congressional Voting Rights Caucus urges that the 45th and 47th President rescind the Preserving and Protecting the Integrity of American Elections order, warning that it "opens the door for baseless accusations of voter fraud and a dangerous erosion of trust in the electoral process." The letter concludes with the following message:

“Free, fair, open and accessible elections are the bedrock of American democracy–implementing this order would do unfathomable harm to our constituents’ right to vote, the freedoms of our democracy, and the integrity of our elections.”

The letter is signed by House members such as Representatives Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL), Darren Soto (D-FL), Jasmine Crockett (D-TX), Marc Veasey (D-TX), Yassamin Ansari (D-AZ), Greg Stanton (D-AZ), Hank Johnson (D-GA), Nikema Williams (D-GA), and David Scott (D-GA).
