O’Rourke Debates a U.S. Senate Bid

Former U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D) has been active on the political scene as of late, stirring speculation that he’s gearing up to run for office once again. The Texas Democrat has now commented on the possibility of launching a U.S. Senate run, affirming that he’s not ruling it out.

During a recent town hall in Denton, Texas, Rep. O’Rourke told the crowd that if Texans wanted him to challenge either Senator John Cornyn (R) or Attorney General Ken Paxton (R), “then yes, I will.”

Speaking to attendees at Anderson’s Eatery & Distillery during an event for his voter mobilization group, Powered by People, the Texas Democrat was asked about a possible U.S. Senate run.

Responding to the question, he said, “I’m gonna infer from your question that you do not want Ken Paxton to be your next senator.” “If… this is what the people of Texas want – that it’s the highest and best use of what I can give to you – then yes, I will,” he continued.

Since leaving the U.S. House, Rep. O’Rourke has been unsuccessful in claiming another office.

He lost to Senator Ted Cruz (R) in 2018 by 3 points, he lost a bid for Texas Governor, and in 2020, he also lost in his bid to secure the presidency. Despite the losses, Rep. O’Rourke has remained a prolific fundraiser, amassing nearly $180 million across previous races, and the 2026 Senate campaign is estimated to go over $200 million in spending.

In an interview with WFAA, Rep. O’Rourke emphasized his focus on grassroots organizing, commenting, “I’m going to do whatever is most helpful for the people of Texas.” “Whatever is the greatest good for the greatest number in this state,” he added.

He also commented on the Republican primary for the senate race, suggesting that if Attorney General Paxton wins the primary, it would be a political “gift” to Democrats who are seeking to flip the seat.
