Cruz Praises Marco Rubio’s Leadership on Foreign Policy and Border Security

WASHINGTON—Senator Ted Cruz (R) offered strong praise for Marco Rubio’s (R) performance in the House during a recent interview with Texas Politics, crediting him with helping deliver major wins on foreign policy, border security, and water access for Texas farmers.

“Yeah, look, I think Marco’s doing a good job,” Sen. Cruz said, pointing to measurable success on the southern border as a top achievement. “We are seeing a number of significant victories, the most notable is securing the border. Where we went from the worst illegal immigration in our nation’s history, 12 million illegal immigrants flooding across our border, to where we are now with illegal crossings having plummeted over 99%. Those are stunning numbers.”

Sen. Cruz highlighted Rubio’s recent testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee as part of ongoing efforts to address long-standing water shortages in South Texas. The water supply in the region is governed by the 1944 Water Treaty, which requires Mexico to deliver 350,000 acre-feet of water annually to the U.S. side.

Sen. Cruz noted that Mexico had been “brazenly defying that treaty” for years, falling 1.3 million acre-feet behind in obligations.

“For the last four years, Mexico’s been brazenly defying that treaty,” Cruz said. “They’re 1.3 million acre-feet of water in arrears. And Joe Biden, the Democrats, would do nothing—they wouldn’t lift a finger to hold Mexico accountable or to fight for South Texas farmers.”

According to Cruz, Rubio’s committed to taking up that fight and has already made an impact. “Marco committed to fight for South Texas farmers and to hold Mexico accountable,” he said.

Cruz also credited President Donald Trump (R) for supporting the effort by issuing a public statement threatening sanctions or tariffs on Mexico. That pressure, along with congressional advocacy, appears to have worked.

“Just a couple of weeks ago, Mexico agreed to provide 400,000 acre-feet of water to Texas for the farmers who are facing a drought,” Cruz said. “That’s an enormous victory.”

The win is particularly meaningful for Texas’ agricultural communities, many of which have faced increasing hardship due to prolonged drought and dwindling water reserves.

From border enforcement to protecting Texas' water supply, Sen. Ted Cruz framed Rubio’s leadership as result-driven and focused on priorities that matter to Texans.
