Rep. Green Introduces Article of Impeachment Against Trump

Texas Rep. Al Green (D) has introduced an article of impeachment against President Donald Trump (R), accusing him of abusing presidential powers by launching unauthorized military strikes against Iran.

Rep. Green’s impeachment article follows mounting concerns that President Trump’s recent military actions represents an effort of circumventing congressional authority and a dangerous shift toward authoritarianism.

“Today, I am introducing an article of impeachment with the help of grassroots freedom fighters, to impeach and remove President Donald J. Trump from office to protect American democracy from entrenching authoritarianism,” Rep. Green said in a press release. “President Trump’s unauthorized bombing of Iran constitutes a de facto declaration of war. No president has the right to drag this nation into war without the authorization of the people’s representatives.”

The article of impeachment, introduced in partnership with advocacy organizations Free Speech for People and 14thNow, cites President Trump’s violation of the War Powers Clause of the U.S. Constitution. Critics argue that the president bypassed Congress by ordering military action, a power constitutionally reserved for lawmakers.

“Donald Trump is not a king,” said John Bonifaz, president of Free Speech for People. “In launching our nation into an illegal and unconstitutional war against Iran, Trump has committed a grave abuse of power. We commend Congressman Al Green for his leadership.”

According to Bonifaz, more than 700,000 Americans have signed onto the group’s campaign to impeach the president at impeachtrumpagain.org.

Rep. Green, who is a long-time critic of Trump, emphasized the constitutional stakes involved. “His authoritarian actions are a warning sign we cannot ignore,” he said. “We must uphold and protect our Constitution from being dismantled by an authoritarian president who seeks unchecked power.”
