U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) praised the Senate’s recent vote to proceed to debate on the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” a sweeping Republican-backed legislative package aimed at enacting several priorities of President Donald Trump (R).
In a statement released after the vote, Sen. Cornyn said the bill delivers on a wide range of issues important to Texans, including tax relief, border security, and gun rights.
“Senate Republicans are one step closer to delivering on President Trump’s agenda by advancing the One Big Beautiful Bill, which will avoid a massive tax increase on Texas families, secure our southern border, remove burdensome taxes on Americans exercising their Second Amendment rights, and chart our country on a path toward fiscal sanity after years of frivolous spending in Washington under Joe Biden,” said Sen. Cornyn.
The bill includes several provisions Sen. Cornyn has championed. Among them is $13.5 billion to reimburse states like Texas for their border enforcement efforts during the Biden administration. It also includes language supporting the potential relocation of the Space Shuttle Discovery from Virginia to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.
Another major component is Sen. Cornyn’s Stop Funding Genital Mutilation Act, which would block federal Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) funding from being used for gender transition procedures at any age.
Additional measures include a modified version of Cornyn’s Small Business Investment Act, aimed at expanding access to financing for small businesses and startups, and provisions from his Feral Swine Eradication Act, providing $105 million for efforts to control invasive feral hog populations.
The bill also proposes reducing certain firearms-related taxes and includes extensive tax-related provisions Cornyn says will benefit Texas families. These include preventing a potential $3,000 tax hike on average households, preserving the full child tax credit for 3.7 million Texas families, and protecting standard deductions and jobs across the state. It also includes work requirements for able-bodied adults without dependents and eliminates taxes on tips and overtime for hourly workers.
On immigration, the bill includes $46.5 billion for border wall construction and infrastructure, $4.1 billion for personnel, and $45 billion for migrant detention. It also increases funding for surveillance, immigration judges, and law enforcement.
“This significant legislation includes key provisions I have championed that put Texans first,” Cornyn said. “Soon we will vote to send it over to the House and on to President Trump’s desk to become law.”
