Rep. Michael Cloud Reflects on Trump's 'One Big Beautiful Bill'

WASHINGTON—Rep. Michael Cloud (R) says the recently passed “Big Beautiful Bill” represents real progress, even if it didn’t deliver everything conservatives hoped for. The sweeping legislation, backed by House Republicans and President Donald Trump, includes major tax cuts, deep federal spending reductions, and structural reforms to executive agencies.

It’s been touted by supporters as a bold step toward fiscal responsibility and slammed by critics as a partisan overhaul.

“You never get everything you want, but that was not the expectation,” Rep. Cloud said in an interview. “We tried to do everything we could to push it as far as we could, especially on the fiscal side of things.”

The bill, a centerpiece of the GOP’s 2025 legislative agenda, aimed to cut taxes, shrink government, and begin a longer-term battle against the national debt. Rep.  Cloud described it as a balancing act between economic stimulus and fiscal restraint.

“You basically had a balance sheet,” he said. “The tax cuts that were going to reinvigorate the American economy and help families on one side and then had us figuring out how to pay for it… and advance a number of our agenda items on the other side.”

Still, Rep. Cloud acknowledged the nation’s $37 trillion debt remains a looming issue. “You’re not going to solve that problem in one bill,” he said. “But happy to see the wins we were able to get in the process.”

When asked if more legislation is coming to address what was left out, Cloud said yes.

“Everything from the appropriations process to future rescission packages—we’re going to have to continue to get our fiscal house in order,” he said. He credited some progress to recent executive action. “The president’s done some work with that, with how they’ve reshaped the bureaucracy and what he’s doing with tariffs.”

Democrats have criticized the legislation as the “Big Ugly Bill,” but Cloud brushed that off. “If they’re calling something bad, it’s probably good,” he said. “Their idea is that a bigger government is better. We know that a bigger government restrains freedom.”

Cloud emphasized the importance of shrinking federal agencies, citing recent reports from the Department of Government Oversight and Ethics (DOGE).

“Some of the stuff that American taxpayers were funding was literally evil,” he said. “We’ve really turned a corner on that kind of thing.”

As Congress heads into its next session, Cloud said he and others remain focused on long-term debt and spending.

“Still more work to be done… but this is a big step in the right direction.”
