Texas Legislative Shake-Up Ahead of 2026 Elections

State Representative Ray Lopez, (D), announced he will not run for reelection to the Texas House of Representatives, ending his legislative career after four terms. Lopez, who first took office in 2019 and previously served on the San Antonio City Council, said he is endorsing his chief of staff, Donovon Rodriguez, to run for the open seat.

I will continue to be that fighter that the district asked for,” Rodriguez said in a treasurer’s report.

The district, which includes parts of west and northwest San Antonio in Bexar County, leans Democratic. Voters in the district backed Vice President Kamala Harris with 57% of the vote in the 2024 election, suggesting that Democrats have a strong position to retain the seat.

Meanwhile, the Republican-led Texas Legislature’s proposed redistricting plan is drawing attention not only for how it redraws political boundaries, but for the strategic opportunities it may create for former representatives.

The new map reshapes key congressional districts and could improve the odds for Republican candidates who narrowly lost previous elections, potentially paving the way for their comebacks in districts now more favorable to the GOP.

Lopez’s departure marks just one of several key exits in advance of the 2026 election cycle. Reps. Giovanni Capriglione (R) and Tony Tinderholt (R) of have also announced they will not seek reelection.

In the Senate, longtime Republican Sen. Robert Nichols (R) is retiring, and Rep. Trent Ashby (R), has launched a campaign to fill his seat.

With multiple vacancies and a shifting political map, Texas is set for a consequential 2026 election season that could reshape  both chambers of the state legislature.
