Governor Greg Abbott announced more than $26 million in funding for critical infrastructure projects in the Rio Grande Valley. The funding is focused on improvements to regional airports and water systems.
"The Rio Grande Valley is absolutely booming," Abbott said during a ceremony held at Mid-Valley Airport in Weslaco. "Because of who you are, because of how large you are, and because of everything that you contribute to the state of Texas, you are an important part of the Texas economic juggernaut."
Abbott presented two proclaimations that direct funding from House Bill 500 toward eight airport restoration projects and essential water and drainage improvements in the region. The investment is aimed at supporting population growth and strengthening the area's role in Texas' economy.
Local leaders praised the Governor's commitment to South Texas. Mayor Adrian Gonzalez presented Abbott with the key to the City of Weslaco, recognizing his ongoing support for infrastructure and economic development in the region.
"The millions of people who work in the Rio Grande Valley are truly instrumental to the future success of our state," Abbott highlighted during his remarks.
Among the officials in attendance were Senators Adam Hinojosa (R) and Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa (D), and Representative Armando Martinez (D).
The funding highlights the state's recognition of the Rio Grande Valley as one of Texas' fastest-growing and economically vital regions.
