Senator Ted Cruz
U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R) visited OpenAI's flagship AI data center in Abilene, Texas, this week, showcasing Texas' growing role in the future of artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Following the tour, OpenAI and Oracle jointly announced a major expansion of the Abilene "Stargate" site, as part of a broader $500 billion commitment to build a series of advanced AI data centers across the United States.
Already under construction, the Abilene facility serves as a cornerstone in OpenAI's efforts to support high-performance training for AI models like ChatGPT. The cloud infrastructure project is expected to generate over $1 billion in direct and indirect economic benefits for the region for over 20 years and create thousands of jobs.
"Texas is leading the way to make sure the United States beats China in the AI race," Cruz said in a statement. "This is the beginning of a long-term effort to invest in American jobs, supply the additional power needed for AI, and deliver products and services that will benefit all Americans."
Cruz recently released a policy framework supporting AI innovation, including the SANDBOX Act, which is designed to reduce federal regulatory burdens while maintaining accountability. He also plans to introduce legislation to streamline permitting processes for AI infrastructure, using this Texas project as a model.
The expansion reflects the national push to enhance U.S. competitiveness in artificial intelligence through domestic investment.
