John Cornyn
U.S. Senator John Cornyn commented on the federal grand jury indictment of former FBI Director James Comey during an interview on Fox News The Story with Martha MacCallum. Cornyn criticized Comey's actions surrounding the Trump presidency and called for accountability at the highest levels of law enforcement.
"Clearly Director Comey went off the rails because of his antipathy- his hatred, really- for Donald Trump and made a number of decisions, including leaking confidential, maybe classified information through a Columbia law professor," Cornyn explained.
He argued that Comey's leaks were intended to prompt the appointment of a special counsel, which ultimately led to Robert Mueller's two-year investigation. He characterized the probe as ultimately yielding "basically nothing to show for it."
While acknowledging Comey is "entitled to a trial and presumption of innocence," Cornyn said it was clear to him that Comey was "bound and determined to destroy President Donald Trump" after being dismissed as FBI Director.
"I think there needs to be accountability, particularly at the highest levels of law enforcement," Cornyn added. "The FBI Director should be somebody who follows the law under all circumstances, not cutting corners and potentially committing criminal offenses."
The indictment has reignited partisan debate over Comey's tenure and the broader role of federal law enforcement in politically charged investigations.
