Texas Lawmakers React to Government Shutdown Amid Partisan Divide

Texas lawmakers have responded to the federal government officially shutting down, following the failure of both Republican and Democratic funding proposals in the Senate.

A Democratic-backed bill would have extended health care subsidies under the Affordable Care Act, while the Republican backed bill aimed to fund the government for seven additional weeks. Without an agreement, the government ran out of funding, officially triggering the shutdown.

Republicans quickly placed blame on Democrats, with several referring to the event as the "Schumer Shutdown."

Senator Ted Cruz (R) said Democrats were "demanding taxpayer-funded healthcare for illegal aliens" and reversing Republican welfare reforms.

"Americans voted for the change under President Trump and a Republican Congress. We should not allow the Democrats' efforts to succeed," he responded.

Sen. John Cornyn (R) called the shutdown "unnecessary and shameful," accusing Democrats of rejecting a "clean" House-passed resolution.

"By not voting with us... Democrats have ensured that Border Patrol agents, military personnel, and hundreds of thousands of other federal employees could be forced to work without pay."

Rep. Pete Sessions (R) echoed similar concerns: "House Republicans did our job...This time, Democrats chose a different path." The Texas Republican blamed Democrats for service disruptions to veterans and military families.

Democrats have questioned why Republicans blame them for the government shutdown when Republicans control the House, Senate, and White House.

"They have only themselves to blame," said Rep. Joaquin Castro (D) on social media.

Rep. Veronica Escobar called the Republicans' funding bill an "unworkable solution," arguing that Republicans "knew it would fail in the Senate."

Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R) and Rep. Chip Roy (R) framed the shut down as a result of deeper disagreements over healthcare and spending priorities.

"Refusing to agree to a clean temporary funding bill so that we can continue negotiating next year's budget in good faith is the definition of insanity," Crenshaw commented.

"The Government is shut down because Dems want socialized medicine & push a $40B/yr in COVID-era subsidies that enrich insurance companies," Roy commented.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) also weighed in on the debacle.

"Republicans JUST VOTED DOWN our bill to avoid a government shutdown...because they wouldn't protect Americans' health care."
