President Donald Trump (R) has endorsed Governor Greg Abbott (R) for re-election, citing his leadership on numerous priorities.
Governor Abbott, who does face Republican opposition, also faces opposition from numerous Texas Democrats. Namely, state Rep. Gina Hinojosa (D), who is considered the Democratic frontrunner. State Rep. James Talarico (D), who is vying for Senator John Cornyn’s (R) seat, endorsed state Rep. Hinojosa.
Governor Abbott, however, has now received an endorsement from the president during a time when Republican infighting in Texas is running rampant.
On social media, President Trump praised the Texas Governor, calling him “strong and highly respected” while noting that the Lone Star state voted for the President with “the most Votes in History, BY FAR)."
The 2024 victory came with help from Texas, though, and President Trump credits Governor Abbott’s “bold and effective leadership” in sending him to the White House.
The President also noted Governor Abbott’s controversial effort to redraw Texas’ congressional map, commenting that “the wonderful people of Texas will have the opportunity to elect 5 new MAGA Republicans in the 2026 Midterm Elections with the passage of their new, fair, and much improved, Congressional Map.”
The map has drawn considerable scrutiny, and Democrats have responded with efforts such as Proposition 50 in California.
In his endorsement, President Trump urged voters to back Governor Abbott, emphasizing that he is “fighting tirelessly to Champion Texas Values, Grow the Economy, Cut Taxes and Regulations, Support our Amazing Farmers and Ranchers, Advance MADE IN THE U.S.A., Unleash American Energy Dominance, Promote School Choice, Keep our now very Secure Border, SECURE, Stop Migrant Crime, Murderers, and other Criminals from illegally entering our Country, Ensure LAW AND ORDER, Protect our Brave Military, Veterans, and Law Enforcement, and Defend our always under siege Second Amendment.”
Governor Abbott called it an "honor" to receive President Trump's endorsement, vowing to continue working with the Trump Administration on behalf of Texans.
