The proposed merger between Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern, announced in July, has gained major momentum after endorsements from President Donald Trump and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, signaling strong political and industry support for what would become the nation's first coast-to-coast, U.S.-based transcontinental rail network.
The merger, valued in the billions, promises to strengthen supply chains, streamline freight logistics, and boost economic growth across Texas, where both rail giants already operate.
The combined company would connect over 50,000 miles of track across 43 stakes, link to 100 ports, and serve 10 international gateways with Mexico and Canada, effectively reshaping how goods move across the country.
Trump told reporters the acquisition "sounds good to me," praising the Union Pacific CEO Jim Vena and calling the company "a great railroad."
"The Union Pacific is a great railroad. A lot of people say that was the place where I got off to a very good start," said President Trump. "I mean, it sounds good to me. I'm a very big fan of the head of the railroad, the head of the Union Pacific."
The Trump administration has also taken steps that could favor the merger's approval, including the appointment of Patrick Fuchs as chair of the Surface Transportation Board, which is expected to review the merger application by January 29.
If approved, the merger is expected to close by early 2027, marking a historic turning point for U.S. railroads and the national economy.
